Context

Mono Bank wanted to let couples, flatmates and friends share money without opening a joint account. The feature had to work across four countries with different rules about shared liability.

Approach

We ran diary studies with 24 households, then prototyped three models: a shared pot, mirrored accounts and a running tally. The running tally won on clarity and lost on control, so we combined it with spending limits per member.

Highlights

  • A ledger that reads like a conversation, not a statement.

  • Settling up in one tap, with the maths explained on request.

  • Rules that adapt to the country of each member.

Outcome

220,000 shared spaces were created in the first quarter after launch, with a 4.7 average rating for the feature in app store reviews mentioning it.
